Minister of Economy Luis Caputo met in Washington, D.C. with the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, to kick off his participation in the IMF and World Bank 2025 Spring Meetings. In this first meeting following the approval of the program, IMF authorities recognized the entire economic team and stressed the importance of continuing to work constructively together. The Minister of Economy, together with the members of the economic team, also participated in the JP Morgan seminar for investors, “Argentina’s Economic Policy: Paths to Stability and Growth.” At the end of the day, Caputo and the Argentinean delegation attended the first G20 Ministers’ session, “Macroeconomic and Global Financial Stability Issues.”

2. Relations between PRO and La Libertad Avanza are strained

From Mar del Plata, former President Mauricio Macri launched a strong accusation against those leaders of his party, Pro, who jumped to La Libertad Avanza (LLA) and gave indications that there are still no definitions to form an “institutional” agreement of the two forces in view of the Buenos Aires elections. “The leaders who had a price have already been bought, those of us who are left have values,” said Macri in a press conference, sitting side-by-side with Guillermo Montenegro, his friend, historical collaborator during the metropolitan administration and current mayor of General Pueyrredón. Answering the former President was the libertarian mayor (former PRO) Diego Valenzuela, who defended his decision to align himself with the national government and said that his entry into the libertarian space is based on political conviction.

3. Demian Reidel becomes president of state-owned Nucleoeléctrica Argentina

The chief of staff of the president’s Council of Advisors, Demian Reidel, became the new president of Nucleoeléctrica Argentina (NASA), the state-owned company that operates and maintains the country’s three nuclear power plants (Atucha I, Atucha II and Embalse). This was decided at the meeting, which also appointed Diego Chaher, the person in charge of the state’s privatizations, as director. Previously, he told the members of the Rotary Club about the Nuclear Plan, which he presented in December last year together with President Javier Milei. Reidel elaborated on the details of the plan, which has a target date of 2030. The Argentine nuclear plan includes three phases. The first consists of the installation of four small modular nuclear reactors at the Atucha complex, which will add 1,200 megawatts to the country’s current 1,763 MW of nuclear capacity. The second phase aims at exporting reactor technology and uranium, with the vision of turning Argentina into a global nuclear power. Finally, the third phase foresees the construction of a nuclear city in Patagonia to house data centers, taking advantage of the region’s cold climate to optimize the energy consumption required for the growth of artificial intelligence.

4. Pope Francis passes away

The week began with news that shook the world, but especially Argentina: the death of Pope Francis. The event inevitably had an impact on the political sphere. From the formal side, seven days of national mourning were decreed in commemoration of the Argentine Pope. On the operational side, both Chambers of the National Congress suspended all their activities and called for special sessions in honor of the religious leader. Likewise, President Javier Milei traveled this Thursday to Rome to attend the funeral of the Supreme Pontiff on Saturday. The Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei; the Presidential Spokesperson, Manuel Adorni; the Minister of Human Capital, Sandra Pettovello; her peer of Security, Patricia Bullrich; the Chancellor Gerardo Werthein; and the Chief of Cabinet, Guillermo Francos, are part of the entourage accompanying him.

5. Economy sees monthly growth of 0.8% in February

In February, the Argentine economy recorded a seasonally adjusted monthly growth of 0.8% and a variation of 5.7% compared to the same month of 2024, according to the Monthly Estimator of Economic Activity (EMAE) published by INDEC. Thus, the inter-monthly indicator has registered positive numbers over the last 10 months, with the exception of September, when it was neutral. Compared to the same month of 2024, 11 of the activity sectors that make up the EMAE registered increases in February, among which financial intermediation (30.2% YoY), fishing (28.3%), “taxes net of subsidies” (11.2%), commerce (7.4%) and manufacturing industry (5%) stood out. The results reinforce the signs of economic recovery that had been registered in other studies by the agency, which in this same week reported a recovery in the use of the installed capacity of the industry, which rose from 57.6% in February 2024 to 58.6% in the same month of 2025. Although it was a moderate improvement, the rebound was leveraged by some key sectors, which until recently had been falling sharply.
