President Andrés Manuel López Obrador commemorates his first year in office with a speech for more than 250,000 people in Mexico City. The President assured that the government needs one more year to secure the changes that he has made part of his campaign.

The President recognizes that insecurity is an outstanding theme for his administration, also underlining that he will be working with the US government on a cooperation agreement. Additionally, he mentioned his dedication to the changes in social policies.

2. United States proposes labor inspections in Mexico regarding USMCA Agreement

As a part of the negotiations for the approval of the USMCA Agreement, democrat legislators proposed to realize inspections in order to verify the fulfilment of the agreements acquired by Mexico, regarding labor issues in order to move forward towards the approval of the agreement. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary and Trade Negotiator, Jesus Seade, rejected the proposal.

According to sources, a collaborator of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a meeting with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and with his Chief of Staff, Alfonso Romo. Pelosi’s collaborator informed that the approval of the USMCA Agreement could be postponed until November 2020, due to the impeachment process of President Donald Trump and the United States elections of the upcoming year, in addition to the difficulties in advancing with issues related to labor.

3. Mexico’s Senate approved a new member of the Justice Supreme Court

With 94 votes in favor, Mexican Senate appoint Margarita Ríos-Farjat as new member of the Justice Supreme Court.

Government official served as President Lopez Obrador’s tax agency, known as The Tax Administration Service, and from January 2020 will fill a vacancy in the Supreme Court due to the resignation of Eduardo Medina Mora, who quits after being under investigation for illicit enrichment.

4. Mexico’s Congress postponed outsourcing regulation

The proposal for an outsourcing regulation, also known as subcontracting, presented and approved by Senator Napoleón Gómez Urrutia and the Labor and Social Insurance Committee of the Senate, caused a negative reaction among the national employers. Due to this situation Senator Ricardo Monreal, Coordinator of Morena’s Parliamentarian Group, proposed to postpone the discussion of the bill project.

Senator Ricardo Monreal comments that this bill hasn’t been discussed properly, and that’s the reason why it will be postponed until January through Open Parliament for approval.

5. Mexico will open the door to private investment in electrical energy, petroleum and gas

Alfonso Romo, Chief of Presidential Office, comments that the Mexican Government does not have enough resources for new investments in the energy sector. Which explains why private investment is being called to support during the six-year term of office.

Mr. Romo assures that the private sector will participate in deep-water drilling, petrochemistry, electricity, drilling of oil and gas pipelines, meanwhile public investment will focus more importantly on oil refining and hydroelectric plants.
