1. Sheinbaum Meets with Governors 

President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum met this week with governors from various states across the country to outline the key infrastructure projects of the incoming government. The governors presented their investment, security, and development projects to Sheinbaum to explore agendas and possibilities.

With the governors from the western and central regions, Dr. Sheinbaum proposed the possibility of allocating 110 billion pesos from the Social Infrastructure Contributions Fund (FAIS) to water projects throughout the country. Additionally, she mentioned that she would seek to include some of the governors’ priority projects in the 2025 Economic Package.

2. Strength of the Mexican Economy Highlighted After “Black Monday” 

Following the collapse of some stock exchanges and financial markets on Monday, known as “Black Monday,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador addressed the situation in his morning briefing. He pointed out that, given the economic integration and strong finances, the moderate depreciation of the Mexican peso did not affect the Mexican economy.

For her part, Claudia Sheinbaum commented that the country is well-positioned to handle such events, thanks to international reserves and the strengths of the domestic market. She highlighted the positive results of the Mexican model, including the reduction in external debt and the increase in private investment.

3. AMLO Supports García Harfuch as the Next Secretary of Security

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met with Omar García Harfuch at the National Palace on Wednesday. In his morning briefing, he mentioned that they discussed the national security strategy and the continuation of efforts to address the causes of insecurity and violence. He reiterated his confidence in García Harfuch, who performed well and delivered results as Secretary of Public Security of Mexico City.

The president announced that he will soon meet with members of the incoming cabinet to review ongoing projects and pending issues.

4. Areas of Opportunity Identified to Enhance Nearshoring

 According to a study by the international firm Bain & Company, Mexico could lose around $200 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) related to nearshoring if it does not strengthen structural aspects within the country. Among the identified areas of opportunity are infrastructure, electricity supply, water, security, and specialized talent.

Jordi Ciuról, the practice leader, noted that if these issues are resolved, Mexico would enhance the value of its exports and increase FDI.

5. Economic Impact of the Blockade on the Mexico-Puebla Highway 

Farmers and communal landholders from a nearby locality to the federal highway Mexico-Puebla have been blocking this road for over 30 hours as a protest for unpaid compensation following the expropriation of land for the construction of the Arco Norte highway. Despite meeting with representatives from the federal government, the parties have not reached an agreement.

Miguel Ángel Méndez, President of the National Chamber of Cargo Transport (Canacar), stated that this blockade will cause losses to the sector of around 10 billion pesos. This group of businessmen is urging the government to resolve the issue promptly to continue their work and mitigate the impact on the supply chain.
