4. Sheinbaum Denies link Between capo Transfer and Trump’s Tariff Threats

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, refuted the statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed that the transfer of 29 capos to the U.S. was an exchange to avoid tariffs.

Sheinbaum insisted that this decision was made exclusively for security reasons in Mexico. According to the president, there was information regarding the potential release of several of these criminals by judges, which could have serious consequences for the country’s security. The Attorney General of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz Manero, clarified that the transfer was not an extradition, but a legal process supported by the National Security Law and other international agreements. The decision was made by Mexico’s Security Council.

5. The Law Against Nepotism and Re-election is Set to be Constitutional

The Chamber of Deputies approved a constitutional reform that prohibits consecutive reelection and nepotism in elected positions. This reform, set to take effect in 2030, aims to prevent relatives of sitting politicians from holding public office simultaneously. Additionally, it bans the immediate reelection of deputies, senators, and municipal presidents, promoting political alternation. The law also imposes restrictions on heads of government, preventing them from being reelected or holding the position again in the future.

Meanwhile, 18 state congresses have approved the reform, making it constitutional and pending its official publication to take effect. The states that have supported the reform include Zacatecas, Baja California, Sonora, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, among others, strengthening the implementation of this law nationwide.
