1. Plan Mexico presented with $277 billion in investments 

As part of the launch of Plan Mexico, 2,000 projects have been registered with an investment of $277 billion from companies that want to reach Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced. The president said that the program – which she presented to representatives of the business sector at the National Museum of Anthropology and History – proposes to face the “uncertainty that comes in the near future.”

She also added that it aims to raise investment as a proportion of GDP above 25 percent from 2026, and above 28 percent in 2030; to generate 1.5 million additional jobs in specialized manufacturing and strategic sectors; to ensure that 50 percent of national supply and consumption in strategic sector are made in Mexico; and to grow the percentage of Mexico-made components to 15 percent in global value chains in the automotive, aerospace, electronics, semiconductor, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors.

2. Trump to create agency to ‘collect’ tariffs

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced the creation of the “External Revenue Service” to collect tariffs and other revenue from foreign sources.

The announcement, made through the social network Truth Social, underscores Trump’s intention to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on Mexico and Canada, justifying it by their alleged failure to stem the flow of migrants and drugs into the United States. He has also indicated that he will increase tariffs on China for not stopping the exit of fentanyl precursors, as well as on any nation that does not comply with its trade guidelines. For her part, President Claudia Sheinbaum showed her disagreement with the announcement and expressed her intention to dialogue with the incoming government to recall the commercial importance of the North American region.

3. President-businessmen meeting week: Amazon and Canadians

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced the investment of $5 billion by in Mexico for the creation of a digital region in Querétaro that is expected to generate 7,000 jobs per year, train 400,000 people, and contribute $10 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the next 15 years, which shows the extraordinary moment that the country is experiencing, promoting the arrival of more investments.

The federal president also met with Canadian and Mexican businessmen in the first CEO Dialogue with Canada, where it was agreed to strengthen the areas of investment opportunities.

4. China controls 13% of global trade; USMCA falls 6%

The North American region, made up of Mexico, the United States and Canada, is facing a serious decline in its share of global trade and gross domestic product (GDP), while, in contrast, China is gaining more and more ground, said Rogelio Ramírez de la O, head of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP).

On the other hand, three years after the signing of the USMCA, officials and experts evaluated the results of the treaty at a forum where the U.S. Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, pointed out that the arrival of Chinese companies in Mexico “displaces the classic U.S. and European brands.”

5. President Sheinbaum puts pressure on the INE to establish rules for judicial election

President Claudia Sheinbaum asked the National Electoral Institute (INE) to define “as soon as possible” the rules of the first popular election of the Judiciary, which will be on June 1.

The President remarked that it is important to issue “clear rules” regarding the judicial election, since it is not clear so far if any political party can call to participate for a candidate “or simulate through a civil association that they are against one or the other.”
