1. Government announces support plan for businesses after tariff hike
The Lula administration has unveiled a contingency plan to assist Brazilian companies affected by the tariff hike imposed by the United States. The measure seeks alternatives to ensure the competitiveness of businesses and to minimize the negative impacts on Brazilian production and exports.
The contingency plan includes a R$30 billion credit line, government purchases, deferred tax payments, and increased tax credit refunds, in addition to various support measures and diplomatic negotiations.

2. Exporters consider government package insufficient
Industrial and export sectors believe that the government’s package of measures to reduce the impact of the 50% surcharge imposed by the United States is a step forward, but insufficient to address structural problems and preserve jobs. Brazilian exporters argue that the measures are not capable of protecting jobs and fear mass layoffs due to the crisis and trade barriers.
According to Brazil’s main industry federations, more effective measures are needed to ensure competitiveness, such as speeding up diplomatic negotiations with the US, opening new markets, and adopting trade defense measures to curb competition from imported products sold at subsidized prices.

3. Brazilian industry confidence falls
Confidence in Brazilian industry declined again in August, according to data from the National Confederation of Industry (CNI). The Industrial Entrepreneur Confidence Index (ICEI) dropped 1.2 points, reaching 46.1 points, indicating pessimism in the sector. This marks the eighth consecutive month the indicator has remained in negative territory. The lack of optimism reflects economic uncertainties and ongoing challenges.
Business owners point to a perceived deterioration in the current economy. According to the CNI, worsening assessments by entrepreneurs regarding the future of the economy and their own businesses was the main factor contributing to the decline in confidence. Expectations for the coming months are also unfavorable. The drop in confidence could affect investments and industrial production, a scenario that calls for attention and measures to reverse this trend.

4. July IPCA points to a more stable scenario
The Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) rose 0.26% in July, according to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This result represents a significant slowdown compared to the previous month, indicating a trend of lower inflationary pressure. The 12-month accumulated inflation rate also showed a downward trajectory, reinforcing the moderation of prices. This scenario is positive for the economy and consumers’ purchasing power.
The main groups influencing this variation were in the food and beverages sector, which recorded smaller-than-expected increases. The transportation sector also contributed to the slowdown of the overall index, with milder variations in its components. With the July results, the IPCA has accumulated a 5.23% increase over the past 12 months. The figure remains above the inflation target set by the National Monetary Council (CMN), which is 3%. In 2025, prices have already risen 3.26%.

5. Retail sales fall for the third consecutive month
Brazilian retail sales fell again in June, dropping 0.1%. This marks the third consecutive month of decline in the sector, indicating a slowdown. The result, released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), came as a negative surprise to the market. The persistence of the decline raises concerns for the economy.
The gradual drop in recent months has been driven by reduced credit availability, caused by high interest rates, and inflation. Several retail segments contributed to the month’s negative result. Families are becoming more cautious with their spending, impacting consumption. The decline in sales reflects economic challenges and uncertainty, and the sector awaits measures that could help reverse this downward trend.
