1. US to invest $21 million to curb screwworm plague

The United States will maintain a blockade on Mexican cattle exports. Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture Julio Berdegue, in a conversation with his U.S. counterpart Brooke L. Rollins, announced that there will be an investment of $21 million from the U.S. to renovate a fly production plant in Metapa, Mexico and promote the eradication of the screwworm.

The U.S. official assured that they are working together with Mexico to protect animals and the food supply. The National Agricultural Council stated that halting livestock imports would mean a loss of $11.4 million per day.

2. EU initiates strategic work in the port of Guaymas, Sonora

The European Union, together with the Secretary of the Navy and the government of Sonora, will build the first green port in Guaymas, Sonora, which will promote the relocation of operations and position the port as the main logistics hub in the Pacific, increasing container operations by up to 90 times.

The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of the Navy, has already invested around $200 million in the Sonora Plan project and will allow the port to operate with clean energy, mainly photovoltaic energy. The facility will also feature a logistics center with zero net emissions, with container terminals and recharging docks for electric ships. Companies such as CMA CGM and MSC, Maersk-Bergué, among others, will participate in the project.

3. Mexican government will favor pharma companies with domestic plants

The Mexican government presented a decree to attract foreign investment and boost the production of drugs, supplies and medical devices in the country to meet domestic demand. The announcement was made by Undersecretary of Health Eduardo Clark, who stated that he will seek to favor those companies that can prove their investment in the national territory.

The measure will take effect with the drug purchase process scheduled for 2026, so companies will have at least seven months to begin the corresponding procedures. Part of Plan Mexico, the objective is to position the country as a leader in the production of vaccines, drugs and medical devices.

4. Court in Washington reinstates imposition of tariffs

A U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals ruled to temporarily stay a federal court action blocking President Donald Trump’s tariff, a move that allows the tariffs to remain in place while an appeal filed by the U.S. government is resolved.

This measure directly impacts Mexican products, as it returns a 25% tax on products such as steel and automobiles. Mexico and Canada will be the most affected again due to their proximity and trade with the United States. The suspension will also be extended until mid-June when the court will rule on the U.S. government’s motion.

5. Government offers 5 point-plan to CNTE to end demonstrations

Amid demonstrations by CNTE, the National Coordinator of Education Workers (NCEW) confirmed after a meeting with the Ministry of the Interior that they will continue negotiations with the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum and achieve the repeal of the ISSSTE law of 2007.

After the dialogues, the NCEW announced that the 5-point proposal presented by the authorities – which includes reducing the retirement age, eliminating the Teacher Career System Unit, revision of working conditions and no repression of teachers – will be taken to the teachers’ bases for consultation. However, the movement considers that no progress has been made since the proposal does not cover their main demands, for which reason they will continue with the demonstrations.
