1. Javier Milei congratulates Donald Trump on his victory

President Javier Milei celebrated Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. elections: “Congratulations on your formidable electoral victory. We know we can count on you to make Argentina great again,” wrote the president from his social network X account. Javier Milei and Donald Trump share a political vision aligned in several aspects, such as support for free market policies. Milei celebrated Trump’s victory, highlighting that his leadership could strengthen an alliance between Argentina and the United States based on an agenda of deregulation and reduction of the state, pillars also central to Milei’s policy. Trump’s victory could, therefore, facilitate specific support for Argentina in financial organizations or in bilateral negotiations, and support the economic agenda that Milei seeks to promote in the country. However, the impact will depend on how this alliance is structured and on the geopolitical conditions in the region.

2. Gerardo Werthein becomes Chancellor and changes in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs began

This Monday, Javier Milei swore in Gerardo Werthein as the new Chancellor of Argentina, replacing Diana Mondino. The new official was sworn in on the Torah, the Jewish book of law. In this context, the replacement of the Secretary of International Economic Relations, Héctor Marcelo Cima, was formalized this Wednesday. Along with Cima, the entire “line” of the Secretariat of International Economic Relations was also removed, including the Undersecretary of International Economic Negotiations and Integration, Gabriel Martínez, and his counterpart of Export and Investment Promotion, Ramiro Velloso. On the other hand, Werthein also removed the Chief of Cabinet, Caspar Sprüngli.

3. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner assumes leadership of the national Justicialist Party (PJ)

The electoral board of the Justicialist Party (PJ), headed by Judge María Servini, met this Tuesday the 5th and formalized Cristina Kirchner as head of Peronism. The former president’s list, “Primero la Patria,” is in fact the only one left standing, after the board rejected for lack of endorsements “Federales un grito de corazón,” which promoted the candidacy of the governor of La Rioja Ricardo Quintela for the internal elections of the party on November 17, which were now pulverized. “It is hereby communicated that the Electoral Board of the Justicialist Party resolved on this day to proclaim the list ‘Primero la Patria,’ headed by comrade Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. The resolution was approved with 13 positive votes and 1 dissenting vote,” says the statement issued by Juan Manuel Olmos, proxy of the Justicialist Party at the national level. As a result of this situation, Quintela criticized former President Cristina Fernández, considering that it would have been “better” if her arrival to the leadership of the PJ would have taken place through “the votes” of the affiliates and not by the decision of Judge María Servini.

4. Blue dollar and country risk continue to fall, while registered private sector employment grows

After the elections in the U.S., which anointed Donald Trump as the new president, the blue dollar recorded its lowest nominal value since May 17 ($1120). At the same time, sovereign debt bonds are turning green again. This has an impact on the country risk, since the indicator prepared by JP Morgan measures the difference paid by the US Treasury bonds compared to the rest of the countries. In that sense, it stands at 852 basis points, about 18 units less than the previous close (-2.07%), and the lowest value since August 2, 2019 (the index marked 829 basis points). On the other hand, the government recorded for the first time, after 11 months of declines, a growth in salaried employment. It was 0.2%, a figure that they recognize as incipient, but which is nevertheless celebrated in the Casa Rosada, when combined with other positive and consecutive indicators of August and September. Finally, Argentina’s export price index registered a 5% decrease in the third quarter of 2024, compared to the same period of 2023, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses.

5. Aeronautical union carries out strike

Between November 6 and 7, 2024, the Aeronautical Personnel Association (APA) union launched a strike at Aeroparque in protest against the non-compliance with salary improvements and working conditions. The strike affected flights of several airlines, causing delays and cancellations. The government quickly intervened, urging to lift the strike and initiate a dialogue. After negotiations, the union decided to suspend the measure, with the promise to establish dialogue tables in the coming days to address the demands. The situation highlighted the current tensions between the aeronautical unions and the government, causing flight delays, rescheduling and collapses in the system.
